The history of Amstel starts on June 11th in Amsterdam, Holland, by two brewers, E. de Pesters and J.H. van Marwijk Kooy. The beer is named after the river Amstel that passes through the city of Amsterdam. Amstel Brouwerij B.V. quickly became one of the biggest brewing companies in Europe and its merge with Heineken N.V. in 1968 represented a milestone in its history, strengthening the position of the Amstel brand in Holland and abroad. Today, Amstel is a strong international beer brand but with very strong local acceptance. Its success is based on its original and pleasant taste, its high and constant quality, its heritage and tradition but also its appeal to modern people, enhanced by strong communication and sponsorships.

Amstel is a lager beer, with 5% alcohol content and an appealing golden colour. It is made with a combination of superb quality light and dark coloured barley malt, carefully selected hops, yeast and water. It is produced by Athenian Brewery S.A. since 1965, always with the original Amstel recipe and under the supervision on Amstel Brouwerij B.V. Athenian Brewery is currently the world's no. 1 producer of Amstel Lager beer.
